In Ghanaian culture, Kente is more than just a fabric. It is history spelled into colourful fabric, it is Ghanaian philosophy, ethics, oral literature, religious beliefs, social values and West African political thought. Different patterns have different meanings. Some represent purity, others strength or courage. Some should be a gift for girls only, and some should not be presented to everyone. Kente is exported as one of the key symbols of African heritage and pride in African ancestry across the diaspora. Despite the proliferation of both hand-woven and machine-printed kente, this specific colour is still considered a symbol of social prestige, nobility and cultural sophistication.
